Broken Doll / Male Figure Series
I've always collected broken dolls and doll fragments, knowing I wanted to use them as the center of a new body of work. After experimenting with how to best convey my message, pairing the dolls with men clicked immediately. The dolls themselves carry a symbolic weight and my photographs utilizing them elicit many interpretations, including domestic violence, male/female relationships, aging and death. But for me, due to personal losses and struggles in my own life, these images have become primarily about how, as we live our lives, we often get hurt, scarred, or knocked down by events. Though we pick ourselves up, we eventually look or feel a bit broken, a little worse for wear. But hopefully, like the dolls, we retain some of our inherent beauty and dignity.
